Learning strategies
These sections are for students who need help to understand what is happening with their exams and can help if you find your teacher difficult to follow.
Section 1
What to look for: -
- Know what Exam Boards you are sitting for each subject.
- Know what number or modules you are sitting e.g. OCR Physics part B.
- Know what the website address for each board you are sitting e.g. aqa.org.uk.
- Syllabus
- Past papers
- Past paper answers
- Examiner’s report
Why you need items in 4 areas
- The Syllabus will give a list of topics, which could be covered in the exam
- Each section will give more detailed breakdown of what is needed. Take for example Chemistry A section may be on Atoms and Molecules. It may be divided down to items on atoms and then structure and then specific parts of the structure.Use this breakdown to compile a revision checklist
- Past papers will allow you to see how the exam is set out and what the scope of the questions is.Exams are set out in syllabus order, so that you need to know certain topics in each question.
- 1/ The question will often ask for a definition and then a problem based on the definition.
- 2/ Use the questions to practice; get use to the style of the questions. Check against the answers against the answer papers.
- Past paper answers allow you to see what the examiner wants in an answer.
- By examining several papers you can see what is needed in an answer and what points are given for each part.
- Examiner’s reports tell you how people answered the questions and where they did not answer correctly.
